Following launch, SimCity developer Maxis took a lot of heat for failing to provide an offline mode for its city-building sim, along with bigger city sizes to play with. Though, Maxis claimed larger cities simply. 'We’ve put months of investigation into making larger city sizes, reworking the terrain maps, changing the routing algorithms of our agent-based system and altering the way that GlassBox processes the data in a larger space,' general manager Patrick Buechner explained. 'After months of testing, I confirm that we will not be providing bigger city sizes.
The system performance challenges we encountered would mean that the vast majority of our players wouldn’t be able to load, much less play with bigger cities. We’ve tried a number of different approaches to bring performance into an acceptable range, but we just couldn’t achieve it within the confines of the engine. We’ve chosen to cease work on bigger city sizes and put that effort into continuing to evolve the core game and explore an offline mode.
SimCity 3000 is a city-building simulation video game. Developed by series creator Maxis and published in 1999 by Electronic Arts (EA), it was the third major installment made in the SimCity series. SimCity 3000 retained most of the gameplay from the previous edition- SimCity 2000.
Some of the experiments we conducted to improve performance on bigger cities will be rolled into future updates to improve overall game performance.'
SimCity 3000 Hints & Tips Zones informationWritten By:Friday, May 5, 2000For those of you who aren't sure where, or when to place your zones, I will give you some background information about them.Zones thrive on two mandatory sources: Roads and power, and will thrive more if you include water. There are some zones that must have water for their full potential. If you don't water a medium or dense zone, for example, they will not develop medium or dense, and you will only see lightly developed areas, so water is key to having a flourishing city. The RCI(Residential, Commercial, Industrial) zones are the ones you will be using most of the time. They do vary much in how they should be treated:IndustrialThe industrial zones are the first to develop when you start a city.
You should have some residential available, because after about 6 months they will be neccessary for future development. They will always start dirty, but as the time progresses, you will start to see some clean industry replace these polluting factories. Don't get the notion that you need better landvalue to get these clean industries.
